The regiment was raised in 1734 for Nicolaus Leopold von Salm. During the War of the Polish Succession, in 1735, the regiment served on the Rhine. During the War of the Austrian Succession, the regiment took part in the battle of Dettingen (June 27, 1743) and served in successive campaigns in the Netherlands.
During the Seven Years' War, the chef of the regiment was: since 1734 till 1770: Nicolaus Leopold Fürst von Salm
During the Seven Years' War, its colonel-commander was: from at least 1759 to at least 1762: Christoph Friedrich von Bettendorf. 1762: Maximilian Franz Ernst, Prince von Salm
Regimental numbers were introduced only in 1769 when this regiment was designated as "I.R. 14".
